47K Illinoisans lose Medicaid

More than 47,000 Illinois residents lost Medicaid health insurance coverage Aug. 1, joining millions of Americans losing Medicaid as states ask recipients to prove eligibility for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic started, and the Illinois number may reach 700,000.

ABORTION: Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Monday announced several new programs to help address the influx of out-of-state abortion seekers the state has seen in the 13 months since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

STUDENT TRAUMA: Illinois will attempt to quantify the level of adversity faced by children in communities across the state under a measure Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law Thursday that aims to improve the way schools address student trauma.

EMMETT TILL: A temporary sign marking the recently designated national monument honoring lynching victim Emmett Till and his mother was unveiled Tuesday at the South Side Chicago church where his funeral was held 68 years ago.

TORNADO DEATHS: An Associated Press analysis found that since 1996, 53% of the tornado deaths in people's homes were in mobile or manufactured housing, which represent less than 6% of the American housing stock.

PAROLE: Gov. J.B. Pritzker on July 28 signed a law that overhauls the state's mandatory supervised release program, formerly known as parole, to give former inmates a better chance to succeed outside of prison and reduce the likelihood that they'll be sent back.
