Thirty-two hogs were killed in a collision on the Western Maryland Railway at Thurmont early Saturday when a train of freight cars drifted unexpectedly down grade and was into the engine while it was taking water. The stock car containing 144 hogs was completely destroyed. Thirty-two hogs died from injuries in the crash. The other swine escaped practically unhurt.

A large crowd attended the public sale of livestock and farming implements on the farm of Vernon F. Smith, near Lewistown, Thanksgiving Day. William H. Darner was the auctioneer and Joseph Bussard was clerk. The bidding was brisk and excellent prices were obtained. One pair of mules brought $400 and another pair $300; cows sold from $80 to $200; pigs from $4 to $11 and farming implements and machinery brought correspondingly good prices.

World champion Doris Brown breezed to an easy win Saturday in the National Women's AAU Cross Country Championships held on the VFW Country Club Course. Nearly 500 spectators and more than 400 girls and women participants braved the cold and windy weather to make this the biggest National Cross Country Meet ever held in the the United States. The Frederick Track and Field Club's Jane Hill, the National 1,500 meter champion, and Ellen Cornish, both finished in the top ten in their repsective divisions.

Hunters registered 84 deer at Frederick County's three checking stations by 7 p.m. Saturday, the opening day of Maryland's 1968 rifle season for buck. Russell S. Strube, Frederick, downed the largest deer of the day, a nine point buck which weighed 150 pounds dressed when checked in at Delphey's Sport Store. Strube reported that he dropped his buck near Point of Rocks.

With just three hours of his term under his belt Tuesday, Frederick County Commissioner John Thompson made a move to dismantle the county's economic development office. Making good on a campaign promise, Mr. Thompson introduced a resolution to abolish the office of economic development and the commission that serves as an advisor to economic development officials. "As a conservative, I was always a little askance when there was a cozy relationship between government and specific private business," Mr. Thompson said. Instead, private land owners and real estate brokers should do the job of luring business to the county, Mr. Thompson said.

It was a passing-of-the-gavel ceremony Tuesday morning at Frederick Community College when the new Frederick County Commissioners officially took office. The five commissioners were sworn in before hundreds of county officials, family and friends who filled the 400-seat Jack B. Kussmaul Theater.
