‘Ohana Donates Shoes To Help School Children And The Homeless In Waianae, Hawaii

PR Web

Honolulu, Hawaii (PRWEB) August 27, 2013

Associates from ‘Ohana Health Plan, Inc., a statewide provider of managed care services for Hawaii’s government-sponsored health care programs, recently donated more than 150 pairs of shoes as well as clothing, linen and personal care items to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center’s (WCCHC) Slipper Drive. The items will be distributed to schools and the homeless in Waianae Coast.

Slippers are the primary footwear for students and residents of this community. There are approximately 3,500 school-age students in Waianae, many coming from low-income families. It is also estimated that there are more than 280 documented homeless adults and children in the area. Approximately 200 of these individuals receive support from WCCHC each week.

“The lack of shoes is not only a health hazard for our homeless population, but it can also hamper learning, since students are required to have adequate footwear to remain in school.” said Charlotte Naone, a WCCHC social worker. “If a slipper breaks, the student is sent home due to safety concerns. Thanks to ‘Ohana’s support, we are able to help keep both our homeless population and our students safe and healthy.”

“’Ohana is committed to helping our members lead better and healthier lives, and to supporting the communities in which they live,” said Wendy Morriarty, ‘Ohana’s state president. “I am proud to work with people who make it a priority to lend a hand when it is needed.”

As of June 30, 2013, ‘Ohana serves approximately 8,000 Medicare Advantage plan members, 35,000 Medicaid plan members and 1,000 Medicare Prescription Drug Plan members in Hawaii.
