Innovation in Accounting Education Award

SARASOTA, Fla., Aug. 15 -- The American Accounting Association issued the following news release:

The American Accounting Association (AAA) is pleased to announce that the 2014 Innovation in Accounting Education Award was given to Ellen J. Glazerman, Leslie C. Knowlton, Lisa Koonce, Samuel R. Leno, David N. Moss, Dan Roam, Julie Smith David, Tracey E. Sutherland, Mikel G. Tiller, Carolyn R. Wilson and G. Peter Wilson for their work "This is Accounting." This AAA award, which is sponsored by the Ernst & Young Foundation, was presented to Glazerman, Knowlton, Koonce, Leno, Moss, Roam, Smith David, Sutherland, Tiller and the Wilsons in the form of a unique glass art piece and a monetary prize on Monday, August 4th at the 2014 AAA Annual Meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ellen J. Glazerman is the Executive Director of the Ernst & Young Foundation, and Director of University Relations, Americas for EY (formerly Ernst & Young). She also supports a variety of initiatives within the firm's Office of Public Policy, Global Diversity and Inclusiveness. Formerly the Americas Director of Campus Recruiting for EY, she joined Ernst & Young LLP in May of 1993 as the Director of the Ernst & Young Foundation. In 1996, Ellen assumed responsibility for the firm's campus recruiting efforts in support of the assurance and tax practices for Ernst & Young. Ellen is a member of the Board of Directors for the Graduate Management Admission Council, a member of the Board of Advisors for the Leventhal School of Accounting, and the Haas School of Business' Center for Financial Reporting. She is a Commissioner for the profession's Pathways in Accounting initiatives. Ellen is Past-Chair of the Forte Foundation Board of Directors, a not-for-profit dedicated to "inspiring women business leaders."

Leslie C. Knowlton, Partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP, assists clients in a variety of technical and operational accounting areas, including financial reporting assistance for public offerings and divestitures/spin-offs, general ledger analyses, financial close process automation projects, and specialist support on financial statement audits with respect to commodity risk management and trading practices. She is widely regarded as a trusted advisor with a cross-disciplinary perspective, demonstrated business acumen and industry knowledge. In addition to serving her clients, Leslie also leads Talent Development for Deloitte. Under her direction, learning and development at Deloitte are aligned with the organization's business priorities and designed to anticipate the evolving needs of clients and professionals operating in today's rapidly changing marketplace. A passionate believer in the power of learning and culture to deliver business value, Leslie champions an inclusive, strengths-based approach to developing leaders today for the workplace of tomorrow.

Lisa Koonce is the Deloitte & Touche Chair in Accounting at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her PhD degree in accounting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990. Professor Koonce's research interests are in financial reporting. She has published her research in journals such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and Contemporary Accounting Research. Professor Koonce currently serves on the editorial boards of The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Behavioral Finance.At the University of Texas, Professor Koonce teaches financial accounting in both the undergraduate and graduate business programs. She is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including The University of Texas Regents Award and the Academic of Distinguished Teachers award.

Samuel R. Leno is currently a member of the Boards of Omnicare (Audit Committee), Lantheus Medical Imaging (Chair of Audit Committee), Zest Dental (Chairman of the Board and Chair of the Audit Committee), and Endotronix. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Harvard Business School Healthcare Initiative. Mr. Leno retired as the Chief Operations Officer of Boston Scientific at the end of 2011. Prior to this and during his 40 + year business career, he has held the positions of Chief Financial Officer for 5 public companies, including Boston Scientific, Zimmer Holdings, Arrow Electronics, Corporate Express and Coram Healthcare. During the first 24 years of his career, he held a number of financial positions with increasing responsibility for Baxter International and American Hospital Supply Corporation. Before beginning his business career, Mr. Leno was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and is a Vietnam veteran. He earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting from Northern Illinois University and his MBA from Roosevelt University.

David N. Moss is the Global Sales CAO for Citi Investor Services. In this role, David leads the development and execution of a global, multi-product sales and client service strategy. Since joining Citi in 2011, David has served in a variety of relationship management and business strategy roles, including as Head of NA Client Strategy and as Head of EMEA Business Advisory. David was previously a consultant with McKinsey & Company, where he counselled financial institutions on growth strategy, client service strategy, sales force effectiveness and organizational design. David began his career with J.P. Morgan Alternative Asset Management and has also spent time with Banc of America Securities. David graduated Cum Laude from Harvard Law School and received his Bachelors of Science in Finance with High Distinction and Honors from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. David served as Treasurer of the Kelley Schoolof Business Alumni Association and as Chair for the Alumni Association Fund. David enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, traveling and racing bicycles.

Julie Smith David is currently the Chief Innovation Officer at the American Accounting Association. Prior to joining AAA in 2011, she was an Associate Professor in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, the Director of the Center for Advancing Business through IT (CABIT), and the Editor-in-Chief of the AAACommons. Her research has focused on enterprise applications, their design, and how they can provide value to companies adopting them and has been published in journals including Management Science, Communications of the ACM, and the Journal of Information Systems. In her AAA role, Julie works extensively with the Publications, Technology and Finance teams. Current projects include working with the Publication Ethics Task Force to develop new policies that specify our cultural norms, coordinating a web redesign project to help the Association communicate more broadly, and supporting the Pathways Commission as they focus on implementing the recommendations, such as working with the team to develop the Vision of Accounting model.

Tracey E. Sutherland, Executive Director of the American Accounting Association (AAA), supports the organization's mission to bring together the academic community to further accounting education and research and to advance the discipline and profession of Accounting. She has been an integral part of the Sharpening Our Vision project which focuses on how our mission in academia, including faculty roles, are changing in the face of our ever changing and expanding world. As Executive Director, Tracey is ensuring that the AAA maintains its mission of being "Thought Leaders in Accounting." After earning her baccalaureate degree from Stetson University, Tracey taught and worked in administration at Auburn University, Saint Louis University and Florida State University where she earned her Ph.D. before becoming Director of Faculty Development at Truman State University prior to her work at the American Accounting Association. She has been with the AAA since 1997.

Mikel G. Tiller joined the faculty of the Kelley School in 1986. He has taught courses in financial, managerial, governmental, international and behavioral accounting in the undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. programs, as well as executive education in the U.S. and abroad. He served as Chair of the Department of Accounting, and the Department of Accounting and Information Systems. Professor Tiller has also held several leadership positions in the American Accounting Association and with not-for-profit and other boards, and serves as a member of the Pathways Commission. His consulting experience includes systems design, performance evaluation, compensation, project evaluation, cost and control systems, and benchmarking. A winner of numerous teaching awards, his research appears in several academic and professional journals. Professor Tiller received B.A. and B.S. degrees at Carson-Newman College and his MBA and Doctorate in Accounting at Indiana University.

Carolyn R. Wilson is a lecturer at Boston College, CEO of NavAcc LLC, and author with her husband, Pete, of Navigating Accounting(TM), a free multimedia website that provides a foundation for understanding, preparing, and using accounting information. Its content seeks to integrate research, teaching, and practice; procedural and conceptual skills; and the interplay between a reporting entity's business and accounting decisions and decisions by users of its accounting reports. Carolyn has held numerous senior management positions. G. Peter Wilson is the Joseph L. Sweeney Chair of Accounting at Boston College and served on faculties at Lake-Sumter Community College, Carnegie-Mellon University, Stanford University, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Pete has given over 250 speeches and taught courses for two Fortune-50 companies. He and his wife, Carolyn, are creating Navigating Accounting(TM), a free multimedia website that provides a foundation for understanding, preparing, and using accounting information. Pete is a recipient of the following awards: AAA's Competitive Manuscript, AAA's Outstanding Educator, AICPAs' Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education, Distinguished Teaching at Stanford Business School, Teacher of the Year at Sloan School of Management, and Teaching with New Media at Boston College.
