Peru’s Progress on Trade Facilitation

BRUSSELS, April 28 -- The World Customs Organization issued the following news release:

During his stay in Peru on the occasion of the Americas/Caribbean Regional Conference, WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya held a series of meetings with political and business leaders.

During a bilateral meeting with the Secretary General on 23 April 2014 the President of Peru, Mr. Ollanta Humala, expressed his support for Customs, especially through his country's future accession to the Revised Kyoto Convention.

Secretary General Mikuriya then held discussions with business representatives on 25 April 2014. The latter were keen to work with SUNAT (Peru's Revenue Authority) in the areas of Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) promotion, under-valuation of goods and compliance. They were supportive of a risk management approach and the development of post-clearance audit activities. They also welcomed Peru becoming a member of the WCO's Policy Commission as this would give it a greater voice within the international Customs community.

At a subsequent meeting, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Luis Miguel Castilla, expressed his interest in Coordinated Border Management and the Single Window to help Peru in its objective of becoming a regional trade hub. He also expressed support for reviewing the national Customs legislation in line with the WTO Agreement on Trade Facilitation and the Revised Kyoto Convention.

In addition, Secretary General Mikuriya met with the Minister of External Trade and Tourism, Ms. Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez, who confirmed her willingness to work closely with Customs towards implementation of the WTO Agreement on Trade Facilitation, including through the National Committee on Trade Facilitation where she envisaged Customs playing a central role.
