arrested City man for pills

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

April 11--A Morgantown man faces drug charges for possession of 32 Ritalin pills. He said he bought the pills for a granddaughter because a family member steals them from h e r.

Eugene Edward Adams, 51, of 3104 Brookhaven Road, was arrested by the Preston County Sheriff 's Department and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. He was arraigned in Preston County Magistrate court. Bail was set at $50,000.

According to the criminal complaint: On Wednesday, Cpl. T.E. Mitter was monitoring traffic on Interstate 68 when he saw a gold Mazda with an apparent exhaust leak and a broken right-turn signal.

He stopped the vehicle and requested Adams' identification, and vehicle insurance and registration cards. Adams told the deputy he had none of the documents because he never registered the car and the plate did not match. He also said his Pennsylvania driver's license had been suspended by the state of Virginia.

Mitter had Adams get out of the car and patted him down for weapons. Mitter found a pill container in Adams' pocket. Adams told the officer that the pills were Ritalin -- a central nervous system stimulant used to treat attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy -- and that he had a prescription.

Mitter checked Adams' information and learned he did not have a Pennsylvania driver's license; he had a Maryland license. His Maryland license was suspended for failure to appear in court.

Adams also had two warrants in Monongalia County that had yet to be served as of midday Thursday.

Searching Adams' vehicle, Mitter found a scale and a fraudulent West Virginia motor vehicle inspection sticker. Adams said he got the sticker because the vehicle would not pass inspection.

Adams was taken to the sheriff 's department, where the pills were checked and found to be Ritalin. Deputies also found half a Subutex pill in the container. According to the FDA, Subutex is "approved for the treatment of opiate dependence." The drug contains buprenorphine hydrochloride, "which works to reduce the symptoms of opiate dependence."

Adams told deputies he takes the Subutex and that he purchased it illegally.

He said he bought the Ritalin for $100 from a man outside of a 7-Eleven in Garrett County, Md. He said he bought the pills for his granddaughter to replace those stolen by a relative.
