North Carolina Woman Convicted Of Staging Car Accidents
April 27--NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- A Wilmington woman was convicted Wednesday by a New Hanover County jury of staging multiple car crashes and filing false insurance claims for the damages.
According to a release from New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David's office, Doris Canty, 62, was convicted after a two-day trial on charges of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretenses.
The release stated that the state Department of Insurance charged Canty, along with her daughter, Jessica Goodman, and her granddaughter, Shaquetta Washington, with staging several car crashes in the Wilmington area.
Judge Phyllis Gorham issued a suspended sentence of eight to 19 months. Canty also will be placed on supervised probation for two years and will have to pay restitution of $400 to the insurance company, a $100 fine and $3,500 in attorney fees.
Canty's daughter Goodman faces multiple fraud charges related to the car accidents. Her trial is set to begin June 26.
Washington, Canty's granddaughter, is charged with aiding and abetting obtaining property by false pretenses.
A trial date has not yet been set for Washington.
