Van Buren fire destroys one house, damages another

"There's nothing suspicious at this fire," Clark said. "It appears to be an accidental fire, but we'll just have to work to determine that."
No one was injured in the fire, though one person occupied the northernmost of the two houses at the time of the fire, Clark said. He said tenants had just signed a lease on the southern house and were remodeling and painting the inside prior to the fire, though it was still vacant.
Clark said the southern residence was fully involved when firefighters arrived on scene, and that the residence north of it had just caught on fire. He said firefighters worked their ways backwards from the northern residence to keep it from being damaged further.
The southern residence is a total loss, and the fire heavily damaged the northern residence, Clark said.
"They may make it a total loss, but you can't take words out of my mouth on that one," he said. "I've seen insurance companies take them and redo them at that point, too."
Clark could not provide a damage cost estimate on the two houses Friday.
