South Middleton School Board approves 3-percent tax increase for next school year

This budget cycle the district applied for two exceptions that allowed the district to raise the tax beyond the base index of 2.4 percent for 2018-19.
After the application and review process, the district obtained Act 1 exceptions that account for cost increases to special education and in the annual contribution the district makes to the Pennsylvania Public School Employees Retirement System.
The administration also recommended the board base revenue projections on a 96-percent instead of a 95-percent collection rate. This combined with the increases under Act 1 would generate enough new revenue to bridge just over half of the projected
The remaining half will be offset by staffing changes that include the partial outsourcing of custodians and future instructional aide hires to save the money in pension and health insurance costs. The district also plans to keep vacant one high school and two elementary school teacher positions.
