WEST NEW YORK, New Jersey, Nov. 21 -- The office of Sen. Robert Menendez, D-New Jersey, issued the following news release:
U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee that sets national health policy, today visited a local Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to encourage New Jerseyans to sign up for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act during the current open enrollment period that ends on Dec. 15, 2017.
"President Trump and his Administration are actively working to sabotage the health insurance marketplace. They are actively betting that if they keep open enrollment a secret, if they force insurers to raise their premiums, if they inject uncertainty into the marketplace, more and more Americans will automatically go uninsured," said Sen. Menendez. "The American people deserve better. They deserve better because the indisputable fact is that no one wins when more families go uninsured. So get covered. Get the word out. And keep fighting back."
The Trump Administration has slashed funding for ACA enrollment efforts and cut the enrollment period in half. After several failed attempts to repeal the ACA, Senate Republicans on the Finance Committee yesterday voted out of committee a tax reform bill that eliminates the individual mandate, driving up premiums and leading to millions of Americans losing their coverage.
The senator, who has long championed FQHCs and providing access to affordable health care, held the event at the U.S. Senator Robert Menendez Pavilion in the North Hudson Community Action (NHCA) Health Center in West New York. He was joined by Congressman Albio Sires (N.J.-08), State Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto, Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez, West New York Mayor Felix Roque, North Bergen Mayor and State Senator Nicholas Sacco, Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner, NHCA President and CEO Joan Quigley, health advocates, enrollment navigators and New Jerseyans who rely on the ACA for health care coverage.
