Rep. Rosen: Health Care Premium Increases and Coverage Losses Driven By Partisan Efforts to Sabotage Our Health Care System

Targeted News Service (Press Releases)

WASHINGTON, May 24 -- Rep. Jacky Rosen, D-Nevada, issued the following news release:

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement in response to a new CBO report (https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/115th-congress-2017-2018/reports/53826-healthinsurancecoverage.pdf) this week that estimates marketplace health care premiums will jump 15 percent next year. The CBO report also estimates that 5 million more people will be uninsured by 2027. The elimination of the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate and President Trump's moves to bring back short-term junk health insurance plans are driving these projected premium increases.

"For months, the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress have led a relentless partisan effort to sabotage our nation's health care system," said Rosen. "Now their reckless and irresponsible actions are projected to drive up insurance premiums on the exchange by a double-digit percentage and force Nevada's hardworking families to pay more for their health care. I will continue to stand up for Nevadans by trying to bring much-needed stability back to the health insurance markets and advocating for commonsense, bipartisan solutions to improve our health care system."

BACKGROUND: President Trump has repeatedly declared his intention to force the ACA to implode, and his administration cut off the Cost-Sharing Reduction (CSR) payments necessary to stabilize the health insurance marketplaces and lower premiums for consumers.

Congresswoman Rosen is a co-sponsor of H.R. 3258, the Marketplace Certainty Act, a bill that would immediately address market instability by controlling costs and helping to keep insurers from exiting the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange. The bill funds CSR payments provided by the ACA, which would help drive down premiums and make insurance plans more affordable.
