Today, Speaker Pelosi announced a standalone resolution affirming the House Counsel's authorization to intervene in the GOP's Texas v. United States lawsuit to defend the Affordable Care Act and protections for pre-existing conditions. The resolution, slated for floor debate and a House vote on January 9, is being introduced today by Freshman Class co-President Colin Allred of Texas.
"In November, the American people delivered a new Democratic House Majority with a stern message for Washington: Republicans' attacks on health care must end," said Speaker Pelosi. "Freshman Congressman Colin Allred's new resolution to strengthen our hand in the Texas v. United States lawsuit shows our new Members leading the charge to protect people with pre-existing conditions and defend the health care of every American. On his very first day in office, Congressman Allred's leadership is already making a difference in stopping attacks on working families' health care."
"The new Democratic House of Representatives will be relentless in defending protections for people with pre-existing conditions and affordable health care for every American," Speaker Pelosi continued. "Republicans should end their assault on health care and join us to do the right thing for the American people."
"The partisan lawsuit attacking Americans' health care must be stopped. I'm proud to lead this charge and keep the promise I made to North Texans to fight for their health care. We will not stand idly by while special interest forces and their allies in Washington look to rip away health care from millions of hard-working American families," said Congressman Allred. "This resolution puts the U.S. House of Representatives, the People's House, back on the side of the people and protecting their health care."
In December, a federal district court judge in Texas ruled in favor of Republicans, issuing a stayed decision that would strike down the entirety of the Affordable Care Act, including protections for people with pre-existing conditions, the ban on lifetime or annual limits on health coverage, the Medicaid expansion and health insurance affordability tax credits, young adults' ability to remain on their parents' insurance until age 26, and more.
The Allred Resolution reiterates the House's intent to seek to intervene as a party in the lawsuit, asserting the House of Representative's authority to defend laws it has passed and enacted into law.
