Reed said the driver stopped immediately after the accident. The road was closed for a short time following the crash.
Thankfully, according to fundraiser organizer Patti Normandie, Kurtis is now back home.
No matter what, however, it will be a long road to recovery because he will need a specialized wheelchair and a hospital bed.
"It's like a year for him to walk and get up there and do what he's supposed to do," Normandie said.
While Normandie, a close friend of Hebert's mother, Dawn, said she has been surprised and extremely grateful for the community's generous response, a lot more money is needed.
Although insurance will pay for some of Kurtis' medical bills and expenses, it won't cover everything. In addition, he will need transportation to and from the hospital for continued therapy and follow-up care.
"It's surprising, but at the same when you look at the big picture, it's not," Normandie said of the expenses related to his recovery.
Word of the teen's condition has caught many by surprise, she said, adding that a lot of people believed his injuries were not as serious.
"People were all taken aback that he was in critical condition," Normandie said.
As for how Kurtis' mother is doing, Normandie said she is hanging in there.
"She's strong, she has to be -- kind of no choice. You have to stay strong for him," Normandie said.
