Newhouse Statement on Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief
Congressional Documents & Publications
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) today released the following statement after voting yes on the Senate amendment to H.R. 601. (Hurricane Supplemental, Debt Limit, Continuing Appropriations, and Flood Insurance Package):
"The legislation before Congress was far from ideal, but President Trump made a deal to provide hurricane relief," said Rep. Newhouse. "I do not support kicking the can down the road by adding a short-term three-month debt ceiling to disaster relief legislation. Republicans should be governing in a fiscally-responsible manner that advances conservative priorities in funding the government and addressing our debt limit. However, I cannot ignore that Hurricane Harvey and its floodwaters came at a very heavy cost, taking 70 lives and causing untold billions in property damage. In the coming days, Hurricane Irma is expected to make landfall, potentially devastating our nation's coast. Despite the many problems with this legislation, I voted to support our fellow Americans who are suffering from natural disasters."
