Newburgh neighborhood ‘ground zero’ for tornado

"She said it felt like a train was running over the house," Vega said, referring to his wife.
On Thursday he cleared debris and hosted a visit from an auto insurance representative who confirmed that his wife's car was totaled. He took pictures of the house, whose roof had a depression where a tree had landed.
Inside the house, ceilings had fallen, letting in rain that damaged floors and leaked to the basement, and walls had cracked.

Haack pointed to dents in the couple's two SUVs, which were surrounded by window-high debris piles right after the tornado passed. A small tree leaned against one side of the house.
His son-in-law brought a chainsaw on Wednesday and the family spent five hours freeing the SUVs. Haack and his wife also cleared a path so their neighbor, whose driveway was buried under a tree and branches, could exit through their driveway.
Black's house had branches sticking out of the ceiling "like daggers" and water pouring in. He will need new dining and living rooms, and a new chimney and roof.
"There's sunshine in the dining room right now," Black said. "We have a skylight."
