Hunter has bristled at repeatedly being called a lobbyist, even though he registered as one. "It's disrespectful and inaccurate. ... I don't appreciate it," he said. "I supervised accountants and actuaries and economists and lawyers and, yes, lobbyists. But I don't pretend to be an economist or an actuary."
Drummond, meanwhile, has faced accusations that he "made a living foreclosing on hundreds of family homes even personally taking one man's home to pay his legal fees." He denies those accusations.
"I'm proud that I have spent my career building businesses and creating jobs in the private sector. I have worked hard all my life, and I have been blessed with success. But, financial success is hollow in and of itself. I believe it must be paired with service," Drummond said Friday. "This is a clear distinction between my opponent and me."
In what may be a final twist in the primary race, the outcome could be decided by the most simple of factors -- name recognition.
Hunter has some name recognition from being the incumbent but Drummond could get votes because he has the same last name as the immensely popular "Pioneer Woman."
The challenger also has made a campaign theme that he was a combat fighter pilot. "He'll keep us safe, just as he has before," one TV ad says.
