HOUSTON, Texas, June 27 -- The campaign of Lizzie Pannill Fletcher, a Democrat running for election in Texas's7th Congressional District, issued the following campaign news:
Placing the blame squarely on Republican lawmakers, three Texas health insurance companies have announced that they are likely to raise insurance premiums drastically over the next year.
Texas health insurer Molina Healthcare cited regulatory and executive actions by the current administration and Republicans in Congress as the cause of the expected rate increases, ranging from 9 percent to over 33 percent for 2019, as did two other companies, Sendero Health Plans and FirstCare Health Plans. While both the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and nonpartisan experts predicted the reckless tax bill would lead to higher premiums and fewer insured Americans, Congressman Culberson and his fellow politicians in Washington chose to ignore their warnings and continue their effort to undermine Americans' healthcare.
"For nearly two decades in Washington, Congressman Culberson has consistently put Washington politics ahead of everyday Texans' best interests," Fletcher said. "His support of a Washington-driven tax plan not only blew a $1.9 trillion hole in the deficit and put working families on the hook, but also recklessly kneecapped our healthcare system, raising costs for millions of families. Our community needs leaders who will stand up for us and put our best interests first, but politicians like John Culberson have failed us repeatedly. Last week's rate increase requests are more proof that Congressman Culberson's time in office must come to an end."
Fletcher is the Democratic nominee in Texas' 7th Congressional District, a district that Hillary Clinton carried in the 2016 election. She has been endorsed by EMILY's List, a leading national organization dedicated to electing pro-choice Democratic women to office, and designated a Red to Blue candidate by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Lizzie is the first woman partner at AZA, a Houston law firm where she has represented Houstonians from all walks of life, helping them find solutions to complex problems. She has been recognized by her peers as one of the 'Best Lawyers in America' in U.S. News and World Report. She co-founded Planned Parenthood Young Leaders, and currently serves on the boards of directors for Writers in the Schools (WITS) and Open Dance Project.
