Jacksonville talks firefighter training at budget workshop

The city released the training ground to the county in 2014, Hardison said.
At that time, people were using the training grounds without insurance or permission, Woodruff said. During one training session a young child was allowed to climb the outside of the burn tower while his dad was training. Had anything happened to the child, Woodruff said the city would have been liable because the only insurance at that location then was theirs.
Woodruff said they went to the county then and told them to either enforce the rules, including having insurance on anyone at the training grounds, or they'd give up the lease. The county said they would not enforce these rules, he said, and the city relinquished the grounds.
"That left us without a training facility," Woodruff said.

Warden said if they bought the land, he would not be willing to allow anyone else to use it without either paying a usage fee or helping with maintenance fees, or something similar.
"It doesn't make good sense if we're going to take it back, I don't want to lease it to anyone unless we're going to charge them," Warden said.
Phillips suggested asking for a lower price for the land due to the money already put in by the city, and Councilman

The council did not make a decision on these or any other matters during their workshop this week. The workshop was for informational purposes to help the councilmembers make budgetary choices at later meetings.
