Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Executive Order Sabotaging the Affordable Care Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump signed an executive order that sabotages the Affordable Care Act and Americans' ability to access affordable health care:
"President Trump and his allies failed to pass their dangerous TrumpCare legislation in Congress, so they are now thwarting the will of the American people and instead trying to sabotage the Affordable Care Act through an executive order. The order the President signed today will result in subpar health care for some and higher costs for others. It will allow Americans with pre-existing conditions to be discriminated against once again or unable to afford coverage. Older Americans will see higher premiums, consumer protections will be undermined, and plans won't have to include essential health benefits. This executive order will significantly destabilize health care markets, leaving consumers with fewer - if any - options for affordable, quality health coverage.
"The President ought to remember that he and the Republican Majorities in the House and Senate will be held responsible for whatever happens to our health care system on their watch. We should instead be pursuing bipartisan efforts to address the health care challenges we face as a nation."
