Fulton High wins surprise grant for student-run coffee bar
The idea for an in-house coffee bar was one that Dossett brought with her to
"Our vision for this library media center is to draw kids in for multiple reasons. It's not just your traditional thing with them coming in here just to check out library books," Dossett said. "We're hoping that this will draw in additional kids and give them a place to be able to sit and collaborate over whatever projects they have."
The grant was awarded as part of Farmers' Thank America's Teachers initiative, which was started in earlier this year and is awarding
"The goal behind this is appreciation," he said. "Farmers theme is 'Think smart' and when you think of smart, what's the first thing you think of? You think of teachers, because there's not a job that didn't come along without teachers."
"Teachers are kind of the unsung heroes of the world, and Farmers wants to take the position that they're not unsung, they're important," he added.
McCullock continued by emphasizing the impact that the new, student-run coffee bar will have and the greater impact of helping schools find funding for their projects and initiatives.
"When you have something impacts a great amount of kids that typically don't have a lot coming towards them, it's easy to get into that," he said. "What makes it important to us, and to me personally, is that sometimes it's not about the dollars, it's about the people that you impact. There's not a lot of money floating around in these classrooms, so for the kids to be able to realize there is something good out there, I think that's a step forward."
For Dossett, the presentation was a gratifying affirmation of the support of the school's students and staff. She explained that the project would take a school-wide effort, but the she knew she had the support she needed.
"I'm still kind of in shock," she said. "It feels awesome, because we worked so hard to get this."
"I've asked different departments that I felt really could bring some student involvement," she added. "Our CTE department is going to help us with the cabinetry, and our graphic arts is going to help design the logo. I wanted total student and staff buy-in. I've got the staff, and I know the students will follow."
