Fire puts nearly $900,000 compactor out of commission
"We fought it and were able to control it, but there are tubes that run up there for the valves and the fire ran through them," Hocker said. "It burned the fuel line in two and fuel poured out on fire."
With fire extinguishers and a 5,000-gallon water truck, staff were able to put out the compactor and burning diesel fuel. The compactor was located at a landfill cell that contains construction refuse and building debris and could have spread to wood and paper pulp inside the cell.
Hocker said it is believed the compactor could have been the cause of the fire instead of material near or inside the cell.
The loss of the compactor won't slow down landfill crews or delay any service, as the landfill will compact material at that cell with a bulldozer.

"Being as it's this close to the end of its use, we will probably put it out for bid," Hocker said. "Pricing and what the insurance company say will determine what we will do."
