Family, friends help single mother after house fire
By the time she made it to the kitchen, the fire had spread to the walls and ceiling, Cook said. She was able to get herself, her daughter and their dog to safety. One of their two cats also made it to safety.
Cook said she does not know what started the fire.
Their possessions and most of their clothes were ruined by water, smoke and fire damage, Cook said. She was renting the house from her grandparents and her possessions were not covered under her grandparents' insurance.
For now, Cook and her daughter are staying in a spare bedroom in her mother's house while Cook saves up the money to replace her and her daughter's possessions and find a new place to live.
"Thankfully my mom had a place where I can stay there and not have to worry about paying rent for a few months until I can get back on my feet," Cook said.
Cook has received support from her family, friends and coworkers. She has been the manager of
"It's really nice to know that a lot of people care," Cook said.
Cook's grandmother,
"She does a good job and she does it on her own," Wilcox said. "She's an all-around good person -- one of those you say is beautiful on the inside and the outside."
