Why is it impossible to put the best minds from both parties together to work on solutions? One might think that's the whole idea behind congressional committees, but those panels rarely recommend major legislation that isn't partisan, pushed through by committee majority.

We imagine politicians on both sides of the aisle would jump up to say they are willing to work together; they too often don't actually work together. It seems blatantly obvious that's not the case, however, because our country faces real, systemic problems.
Why aren't party "leaders" putting their members together in a room and saying: "Fix this"? Is it that partisanship is simply too profitable a model -- in terms of power and money -- to consider cooperation?
If so, imagine the calamitous prospects should any immediate, existential threat befall our nation.
