Delmont Volunteer Fire Department to explore new revenue source: Billing insurers
Fire Chief
"It's a way to generate some additional revenue for our volunteer fire department," Clark said. "They'll bill the insurance companies, and if they don't pay, that's it."
At present,
Council would have to pass an ordinance to permit the department to bill insurance companies.

"When we've been able to bill -- and we don't bill for every little accident, typically it's for extrications, large fluid cleanups and if we're (on scene) for an extended period of time -- we've been successful about a third of the time," Bohinc said.

"Besides lapsed insurance or (a person with) no insurance whatsoever, (successful billing) just depends on the company," Meder said. "Certain insurance companies simply will not pay anything. Some companies pay for things like cleanup and expendable (materials). It really just depends on what insurance company (is billed) and what their policies cover."
If an insurance company does not pay when billed,
Clark said department personnel would begin working with PA Fire Recovery Services officials to create a fee schedule.
