City releases annual flood mitigation plan
The plan maintenance process includes requirements for monitoring, evaluating and updating the plan, according to a city news release. An annual progress report tracking the the plan's recommendations is one such requirement in the NFIP Community Rating System's annual recertification process. This report constitutes the second review of the county's plan since its adoption.
"We have a lot of flood zones in the city and county and it's important that people know what the risks are when they live in a flood zone or, even if you don't, it's important to know that you live near one and what it means," Director of Planning and Development
Forgey added that along with keeping residents informed about
"The projects that we do are reviewed under the Community Rating (System)," he said. "They come out with a score, basically, of the things that we're doing to be prepared for flooding or to prevent flooding. The lower the score from one to 10, the bigger a discount on people's flood insurance. The more activities we do to prevent flooding, the cheaper people's flood insurance is."
Forgey said that for each level the CRS rating goes down, insurance costs can decrease 5 percent.
