City Council considers health insurance coverage

Under that policy, Council members and their dependents were eligible for health and dental insurance benefits during their term of office.
It also required several conditions, including: enrollment being subject to the same eligibility requirements as active employees; the city paying for 100 percent of the Council member's premium; and Council members and dependents being eligible for COBRA benefits.
If the new policy was adopted, the city would pay for 70 percent of the employee coverage and the Council member would pay 30 percent until a wellness goal was reached, according to city documents. Once that happens, the city would pay 100 percent.
If approved, current Council members would not be eligible to receive coverage until they were re-elected, City Manager
"If this were to be enacted, Council members would not be eligible until they were re-elected or elected for the first time," Macomber said.
Macomber also asked if the policy would encourage people to only seek a Council seat just to obtain health insurance coverage.
"If you ran strictly for health insurance I'd say that that's pretty crazy as far as I'm concerned,"
Some Council members also said it might be an incentive to encourage more people to seek a Council seat.
