The fire appears to have started outside at the back of the house, Bostwick said. He confirmed reports workers had been working on the back deck earlier in the day, but it wasn't clear if that played a role in the blaze.

Within minutes, seven on-duty firefighters were at the scene, Bostwick said. That number grew to a total of 19 with dual-role community service officers and off-duty firefighters, he said.
Crews were able to knock down the flames on the first floor and then moved to the basement to attack that fire.
"The whole building was pretty well charged with smoke ... . Shortly after the first crews entered the building, the fire vented through the roof. We could see visible flame there," Bostwick said.
He said firefighters soon realized the floor joists presented a danger.
"They failed pretty quickly, and it burned through most of that in one of the rooms, and we realized the floor was compromised, so we didn't want to send anybody inside," Bostwick said. He said they pulled all of the firefighters out.
