July 02--BLOOMINGTON -- A rainy June led to mixed claims results for Bloomington's two locally-based insurance companies.
As of Monday, Country Financial had received 2,088 auto claims as a result of storms that occurred in the first half of 2015 in Illinois, said Country Financial spokesman Chris Stroisch. The company expects to pay out $6.3 million to cover those claims.
That compares to 2014 claims for the same time period, which saw 4,373 claims with payouts of $10.6 million.
"This year has actually been quite a bit slower than last year," he said. "In fact, through May, we had approximately half of the storm claims we had last year during the same time period. June has been an active month but not active enough to match last year's numbers year-to-date."
State Farm spokeswoman Holly Anderson said about 5,000 claims have been filed in the past two months, compared with 4,400 in 2014.
The company could not provide the amount of money paid out for those claims.
Through Monday, Country Financial had received 8,472 storm-related property claims from Illinois, compared to 13,959 property storm-related claims in 2014, with $79.9 million in payouts.
Most of this year's damage was attributed to wind and hail, with the rest from sump pump overflows, lightning and other causes, Stroisch said.
Country expects to pay more than $56.5 million to cover storm-related property claims in Illinois from the first half of the year. About 760 came from the Central Illinois area, he said.
"We anticipate the number of storm-related property claims to continue to increase as there is an ongoing chance of precipitation and storms throughout the state this week," he said.
Crop claims are starting to come in, he said, and adjusters are in the fields to determine the levels of damage.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln said June was the wettest on record for Illinois, with a statewide average 8.97 inches.
