Virginia Insurance Commissioner Gross to Retire
Virginia Insurance Commissioner Alfred W. Gross announced plans to retire at the end of the year after three decades at the state's Bureau of Insurance.
Gross, 64, has served as commissioner since being named to the post by the Virginia State Corporation Commission in 1996. Previously, he was deputy commissioner of the SCC's financial regulation section in the bureau of insurance (BestWire, July 29, 1996). Gross joined the bureau as an insurance examiner before becoming supervisor of company licensing/regulatory compliance from 1983 to 1989, when he was then named deputy commissioner.
"It is with mixed emotions that I am making this decision," Gross said in a statement. "I am looking forward to retirement with great anticipation. But, it is going to be difficult to part company with the bureau's highly dedicated and capable staff with whom I have worked since 1981."
The Bureau of Insurance oversees compliance with Virginia's insurance laws affecting more than 2,500 insurance companies, groups, and plans; and nearly 184,000 insurance agencies and agents.
Gross has taken leadership positions within the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and the International Association of Insurance Supervisors. Most recently, he served as chairman of the NAIC Financial Condition Committee and the IAIS Technical Committee.
The retiring commissioner will assist in a "seamless transition" during the hunt for a successor, SCC Chairman James C. Dimitri said in a statement. "With all of the demands and changes occurring in the insurance marketplace, we are grateful he has built such a solid internal bureau team to carry on the work of overseeing the insurance industry," Dimitri said.
