Watts also presented a request for Workmen's Compensation for volunteer firefighters.
"The problem we have is that by paying our volunteer firefighters, it affects the amount of worker's compensation that they can draw," Watts said. "For example, if one would be injured tonight at a fire or during a training program, the amount of compensation would be based on what we pay them as a firefighter instead of what they make at their full-time job. Watts said he has found a solution to the problem, one that involves Volunteer Fire Insurance Service, which provides insurance to fire departments across the nation.
"We can correct this problem," Watts said. "They provide what I call gap insurance, which they would pay the amount that equals to what the firefighter would get from their full-time employment ... This insurance will pay them, should they become injured with us, what they make on their full-time job."
Watts said firefighters and other part-time employees would get the maximum workmen's compensation benefit.
