"This is terrible," Sipple said from her front door. "Mimi was a lovely girl, absolutely lovely girl. I've known her since she was about 3. She was brilliant."
The family purchased the home when Liu was a toddler, and moved onto the second floor, Sipple said. She remembers a young Liu walking through the hallways, counting numbers in English and Chinese. The little girl quickly grew into a talented musician, her neighbor said.
"She'd start playing the piano and I could hear the scales," Sipple said, holding back tears. "It was wonderful. I'd just turn off everything and listen to her play."
Sipple retreated into her living room and retrieved a snapshot from about 2001 that she keeps on her mantle. It was Mimi, hugging a toddler identified as her sister, beaming into the lens.
"It's terrible," Sipple repeated.
