Mojave QB leaves early with injury, teammates fight off Chaparral for win

Sept. 06--The Mojave football team started the season Aug. 30 with 26 players. Seven days later, the Rattlers finished their second game with just 16.

While they hung on to beat visiting Chaparral 32-26 to improve to 2-0 overall, one of the injuries may prove costly. Three-year quarterback Zack Arave was one of four Mojave players to leave with injury after hurting his shoulder. His status for next week is in question.

Arave completed 3 for 4 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed five times for 81 yards and another score before being injured. He was replaced by junior L.J. Cunningham, who rushed 11 times for 96 yards and a touchdown.

Davion Fletcher and Ty Flanagan each had touchdown receptions for Mojave, and Flanagan rushed 18 times for 130 yards and a touchdown. Fletcher appeared to score an insurance touchdown on an interception return for a score, but a player on the Mojave bench was penalized for running onto the field prematurely in celebration.

Instead, the Mojave defense held Chaparral from scoring from inside the 30-yard line with less than two minutes remaining to salvage a win.

"They were a tough team," Mojave coach Joe Delgado said of Chaparral.
