Longtime CEO, Founder Retires From Mississippi’s AmFed

AmFed National Insurance Co. President and Chief Executive Officer John "Billy" Roberts has retired from the workers’ compensation carrier he started a decade ago.
Chief Operations Officer Mike Richardson, who has been with AmFed since 1995, will now direct its operations.
Roberts founded AmFed Cos. LLC as a workers’ compensation managing general agency in 1992. In 2001, AmFed National Insurance Co. was formed, and subsequently, Companion Property and Casualty Insurance Group of Columbia, S.C., acquired the company in 2008. AmFed, which writes workers’ comp and employers’ liability coverage in Mississippi, had direct premiums written of $14.8 million last year, according to BestLink, which provides online access to A.M. Best’s database of insurance information.
Roberts continues to serve on the Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Commission Advisory Board and the Mississippi Property & Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association Board.
AmFed National Insurance Co. currently has a Best’s Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent). Companion Property & Casualty Group, which does business in 47 states through a network of independent agents, brokers and business partners, also currently has a Best’s Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent).
