The criteria used to select a recipient is academic accomplishment, financial need, extracurricular activities and service to others. The selection is made by the church's council on ministries.

"The council choose Darren because they watched him grow up in the church. He never hesitated to volunteer for many groups in the church," Hickerson said. "My favorite memory of Darren was from several years ago when he took the song 'Behind Blue Eyes' by The Who and created an Easter play from it to present it in front of the church. He also was our biggest angel in our voices of angels choir."
