LOCAL GOLF: Davis, Pash, Ross, xxx claim club championships

Sept. 14--For Christian Davis, Pat Ross, John Pash and Jody Fitzsimmons, it was the perfect ending to a summer of golf.

Davis (Glenmaura National), Ross (Elmhurst), Pash (Elkview) and Fitzsimmons (Glen Oak) each claimed their respective men's club champions titles.

For Pash, it was his fifth title in the last nine years.

Canoe Club

Steve and Sharon Hudacek and Deb and Jim Mileski posted a 141 score to win the Yellow Ball tourney by a stroke over Robey Schnessel, Ken Porzucek, Hank Hewitt and Hank Jellock Sr. Third were Jim Bonczek, Bill Jackson, Jeff WIlliams and Joe Kazista.

C.C. of Scranton

Noel O'Brien posted the low net score of 68 as five ladies managed to "Beat the Pro" in the weekly tournament. Patti WalshLinda Sproul (74), Carol Chermak (75) and Barb Erhard (76) all had scores lower that the target score of 77. Low putts winners were Sproul (30), O'Brien (32), Patti Greco (34) and Walsh (35).

--Matthew Hoover and Frank DeGaetano blistered the course and the field, shooting a 7-under 65 to win the CMC Jack Sanner Memorial tournament by seven strokes over Mario Costa and Armando Salavanti. Other flight winners and runners-up: First, Paul M. Dennebaum-Paul Dennebaum (82), Pat McDonald-Matthew Boyd (82); Second, Joe Fisne-Sean McAndrew (87), Tom Byrne-Arthur Russo (87); Mixed/Ladies, Jackie Brozena-Harriet Franklin (84), Kristine Lowther-Louise Pace (107).

Elkview C.C.

John Pash crushed the field, winning his fifth club championship in nine years with rounds of 71-70-69, a 6-under-par total of 210. On a course which featured firm, fast conditions, Pash recorded 15 birdies and an eagle. Frank Osborne was runner-up at 221, Joe Klikus third at 224, Ken Bolcavage fourth at 225, and Brian Brown fifth at 228. Other flights: First, Tom Schank (248), Joe Miegoc (253); Second, Joe Barrette (238), Steve Griffiths (247); Third, Joe Kutsop (253), Glenn Moskosky (260); Fourth, Joe Galdieri (245), Walt Zabrowski (263); Fifth, Ray Cerra (268), Neil Neary (274).

Elmhurst C.C.

Pat Ross shot a closing 67, 5-under-par, to make it back-to-back men's club championships with a 211 total, 5-under par, topping Mike Bonavoglia by three strokes. The rest of the top five were Bryan Marzolino (222), Doug Nardella (224) and Ryan Manley (228).

Emanon C.C.

Ashley Machine defeated O'Connor Plumbing, 3-0, and Selenski Insurance blanked Powers to advance to the semifinals of the Emanon Golf League. John Mulhern posted a 2-over 36 and Rich Brown shot 37 for Ashley's. Tom Kerrigan had 36 for O'Connor's. Rob Romasiewicz fired an even-par 34 to lead Selenski's.

Fox Hill C.C.

Winning the ladies golf league captain-and-crew tournament were Joyce Ashley, Winifred Reap and Emma Jean Dente with a score of 73, one better than Dodie Kuharchik, Marena Gibbons and Connie Bruno, and three in front of Helen Rava, Louise Hennigan, Roseann Lavelle and Susan Silverblatt.

Glen Oak C.C.

He'd been close all summer in a lot of tournaments, but in the one for individual bragging rights, Jody Fitzsimmons came through with a 1-up victory over Bill Tarabek to capture the men's club championship. In the women's division, Roz Stahl rolled to a 5 and 4 victory over MaryAnn Yonchiuk, while a pair of the club's renowned players squared off in the super senior match, with Robey Schnessel posting a 3 and 2 victory over Mack Saunders.

Glenmaura National

Christian Davis made a final-round charge with a 1-under-par 70 to edge Pat Mitchell by a stroke to win the men's club championship. Davis finished with a 36-hole score of 148, 6-over par. Mark Hoover shot a pair of 76s to finish third, and Chas Dennis was fourth (153).

Ed Gregorczyk had 70 in his opening round and also finished at 148, coasting to an eight-stroke margin of victory, with Gene Chiavacci second. Mike Sokoloski won the super seniors with a 151, with Bill Walthour (167) second. In flighted play, Tony Parise finished with eight points in Stableford scoring to edge Gene Smargiassi by two. Green Tee flight winner was Fred Lombardo.

--Kevin Mitchell Sr. and Patrick Mitchell teamed up to a shoot a 1-over 72 to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia's 103rd Father and Son tournament on their home course. The Mitchells posted a three-stroke victory in the alternate shot format after taking the best drive.

Holes-in-one

Bob Simons registered his fourth hole-in-one while playing in the senior club championship at Honesdale Golf Club. Simons used a 5-iron to ace the 160-yard sixth hole while playing with Tom Howe and Irv Williams.

--Carol Kaufman aced the 150-yard 12th hole at Elkview Country Club using a 7-wood. The moment was a family celebration as she was playing with her son Brian and grandson Eddie.

Honesdale G.C.

Tom Howe posted a four-stroke victory over Irv Williams to win the senior club championship, firing a 36-hole total of 141, 1-over par. Ralph Langendoerfer</person>(156) won the super seniors title with a seven-shot win over Jim Fulkerson. Senior flight results were: First, Bob Simons (148), Kim Johns (155); Second, Mike Hiller (169), Tom Pennell (170).

Joanne Wychowanec won the women's club title and Rita O'Neill placed second. Flight winners and runners-up were: First, Judy Goyette and Veronica Gardas; Second, Linda Soden and Beth Carmody. Earlier results form the club had some incorrect information.

Lakeland G.C.

Lakeland Swingers' player of the week was Mary Nicosia with a 41. The previous week's winner was Beth Bennett with a 39. Sandy Lane holed a birdie on No. 7.

--Patti Evanish carded a bird on No. 9 along with two pars to put her on top with a score of 38 in Missing Links League play. Irene Barnoski had the low score of 37 in previous week's play.

--Happy Hackers' captainand-crew winning team with a score of 33 and 12 putts was Jodi Rogalla, Susan Cognetti, Bertie Dietrick and Ceil Rydzewski.

--Joyce Harrington was top golfer in the Scranton Women Teachers' League on their last day of golf. She scored a 41 with a birdie on No. 5.

--Larry Schrader's eagle on No. 9 put him and partner Jodi Rogalla on top in the Friday Night League. They finished with a 33. Ron and Karen Brown followed with a 34.

For the first time in the 40-plus year history of the Thursday Night League, there was no need for an overall season championship match. That's because Tom Guse and John Orloski led the second half from wire-to-wire to claim both halves, fending off a late charge from two other teams.

--Senior League action saw Gene Hopkins jump back atop the standings, followed by Bob Corrigan and Don Bocklekamp. With just a week to play, Mike Lopatka and Ed Lowe are only one point behind Bocklekamp and have a shot at the title. Charlie Worthington leads the group significantly with his high of 39 pars for the season.

Montrose C.C.

Billy and Mike Stranburg turned in quite a performance on the second day of the Nellie Warner Member-Guest tourney. Firing a 12-under 60 in the captain-and-mate event, they outdistanced Cole and Barry Wheaton by six shots, with Steve Adriance-Brian Harmon two more back. Other flights: First, Lew Grubham-Jeff Catlin (138), Rex Maxey-Dave Morrell (139), Dave Snyder-Marty Brown (139); Second, Al Bennett-Jack Larsen (146), Pat Warner-Gary Culotta (149), Don Caterson-Al Bertsch (150); Third, Carl Kwan-Paul Blow (160), Al Reimel-Kerry Graham (160), Frank Kwader-Steve MacNamee (161).

Scott Greens G.C.

It was a hard-fought battle but Pat and Fran Jolley prevailed over Kim Nudleman and John Boone to win the second half of the Scramblers Mixed League. Finishing tied for second were the teams of Sue and Tony Tolerico, and Jovanna Rusnak and John Killiany. The Jolleys will play the first-half champs, Liz and Mike Sokoloski, for the all-season championship.

--Gary Zinsky and Dawn Martin led the Wednesday Mixed League with an even-par 33, followed by Cheryl and Bill Kosydar (35). Cheryl's 30-footer for birdie on No. 6 highlighted their round. Kevin Naniewicz had the play of the day, driving within 10 feet of No. 9's green on the 233-yard uphill hole, chipping on and sinking the birdie putt. Diane Shibley drove No. 9 and Linda Guagliardo putted for eagle, while Jill McAlarney drove the par-4 second and Dan Davis rolled in the birdie putt.

--In the Monday Madness League, the team of Jayme Morano-Mike DePietro hold a slim lead over Jon Borgna-Mark Kokindo and Tim Payne-Rob Vail leading into the final weeks of the second half. Depietro and Borgna shot the low gross scores of 37.

Stone Hedge C.C.

Mike Heck and Josh Pash teamed up to shoot a 36-hole score of 5-under par to win the Kenia Memorial better-ball tournament, edging Bob Andrejko-Mark Bartkowski and Robin Bonda-Jerry Tonkin by one stroke. Mario Costa and Tom Piwowarski were fourth at 143. First flight winners were Steve Sickler and Billy Ramakus (138), followed by Joe Bianco-Gary DeRichie (145), Dave Walters Sr. and Jr. (148) and Tony Kenia and Steve Zilla (151).--Dave Walters topped Dave Amori to win the championship flight of the handicap tournament, while Bill Longstreet Sr. knocked off Gerry Franko in the first flight.

Wemberly Hills

Bob Smith and Ken Crown claimed the "Zip League" championship with a win over Dale Choyka and D.J. James. The annual league outing and tournament will be Sept. 27 at 9:30 a.m.

--The team of Stan Buczynski and Lanny Ross set a Throop Golf League record by firing an 8-under par round to win the league's Working Man's Open. Under ideal scoring conditions, and led by Ross' two Eagles, the team waited in the clubhouse until Joe Garrick and Joe Yusinski ended their round at 7-under to finish in second. Tied for third were Mike Tellip-Donny Weiland, Walter Zabrowski-John Adamsky, and Joe Zagursky-Frank Gosko, all at 6-under. Next up will be the weather-delayed Firecracker Open on Oct. 18.
