Actuarial Science Option Added
ERIE, Pa., July 8 -- Gannon University issued the following news release:
Gannon University has added a concentration in actuarial science to its existing bachelor's degree program in mathematics (http://www.gannon.edu/PROGRAMS/UNDER/math.asp).
The concentration is designed for students interested in careers in the actuarial field and in financial mathematics. The new concentration is being offered in the Fall 2010 semester.
An actuary is a business professional who manages the financial impact of risk and uncertainty. Actuaries assess financial security systems with a focus on their complexity, their mathematics, and their mechanisms.
Gannon mathematics majors who opt for the concentration in actuarial science will take additional courses in economics, finance, risk management, and financial mathematics. The concentration will help students prepare for three professional actuarial exams: P/1 (Probability), FM/2 (Financial Mathematics), and MFE/3F (Financial Economics).
Gannon's mathematics department (http://www.gannon.edu/departmental/math/default.asp) will continue to offer its traditional mathematics major as well as the secondary education curriculum for students who wish to pursue a certification allowing them to teach mathematics at the middle school or high school level.
More about the Actuarial Science Concentration
Gannon's mathematics department added the concentration partially in response to recent growth in the actuarial field. For example, U.S.News & World Report and Jobs Rated Almanac consistently rate actuary as one of the "top five professional positions."
In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a growth rate of 10-15 percent, through 2014, in the actuarial field in northwest Pennsylvania. Nationally, growth rates of 24 percent in the field are forecast through 2016.
The concentration also is designed to complement the University's existing program in risk management and insurance (http://www.gannon.edu/PROGRAMS/UNDER/risk.asp).
