1,100-plus workers to lose jobs [Chicago Tribune]
Sept. 09--More than 1,100 Illinois workers at about a dozen companies learned last month that they will lose their jobs in plant closings or mass layoffs, according to state records posted online earlier this week.
"This shows that the recession isn't over," said Jack Ablin, Harris Private Bank chief investment officer. "We're still grappling with a difficult economic environment."
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity requires employers to provide 60 days' notice of plant closures or mass layoffs. The law applies to businesses with at least 75 full-time workers.
A mass layoff occurs at a single site of employment resulting in job losses during any 30-day period of at least a third of employees and at least 25 employees, or at least 250 employees regardless of the percentage.
Here are most of the companies instituting layoffs:
-- Heritage Manor, a retirement facility, is closing a Beardstown location in a consolidation, affecting 72 workers. The Bloomington-based company, which has more than 30 senior care centers statewide, couldn't be reached for comment.
-- Bridgeview Aerosol LLC, which packages chemical products in Bridgeview, is cutting 136 jobs as it reorganizes in bankruptcy court. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October. The company couldn't be reached for comment, but the Daily Deal, a trade publication, has reported that it was forced into bankruptcy after a contract dispute with a customer, Black Flag Brands LLC.
-- Life insurance concern Lincoln National Corp. is laying off 62 workers in Arlington Heights. The Pennsylvania-based company has been the subject of recent takeover speculation. It couldn't be reached for comment.
--Northwestern Memorial Hospital, at 251 E. Huron St. in Chicago, is reducing its payroll by 115 workers. The hospital said it outsourced some facilities jobs, including electrician and plumbing posts, to an outside company that in turn hired the workers.
-- PNC Bank at 5635 S. Archer is cutting 83 jobs. PNC acquired National City Bank in December 2008. "We're consolidating some functions currently handled at Archer Avenue with PNC's operations in Itasca as part of previously announced, merger-related staffing changes," a PNC spokesman said. "These are back-office processing positions, and about one-third are part time." The Archer Avenue facility will remain open and staffed, and PNC will try to find work elsewhere for the affected workers, he said.
-- Claire-Sprayway Inc., which makes polishes and sanitation products, is closing an operation at 500 S. Vista Ave. in Addison, putting 74 people out of work, state records show. It couldn't be reached.
-- Restaurant chain Bob Evans is closing a location in Galva, resulting in the loss of 63 jobs. It couldn't be reached.
-- Interstate Brands Corp. is closing a bakery in Decatur, affecting 65 workers. The company said it lost a significant contract making a line of hamburger buns and rolls.
-- Precision Dormer LLC, a toolmaker, is restructuring and cutting 169 jobs in Crystal Lake. It couldn't be reached.
-- National Manufacturing Co., which makes hardware for the building industry, is closing its Rock Falls facility. Nearly 230 workers will be affected, or 947 when "trade-certified leased workers" are included. It couldn't be reached.
Three other companies in Prophetstown, Northbrook and Chicago also told the state they are cutting an additional 70 jobs as part of previously announced layoffs.
