Boys and Girls Club of Durant members learn about the American Flag

Children were told how and why a flag is retired and why it is folded in a customary manner when being retired or given to a fallen soldier's family.

Children were also given information about the flag to take home.
"One of our core areas is citizenship," said
He said he feels it is important for the children to learn what the our flag symbolizes, things such as liberty, freedom and opportunity.
He said the children see a lot of flags but don't always know their meaning, and are more likely to recognize symbols in popular culture.
"They know what mascots represent, but they really don't pay attention to what the flag represents," Sands said.
Children also heard a poem about the flag's meaning and participated in the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
