"I'm very sorry that he's experiencing that difficulty," Luddy said. "We are asked by whoever provides his benefits to manage pharmacy benefits on their behalf."
After Finnegan's case was researched, Luddy said Thursday in an email, his medication was reclassified as a specialty medication, which are medications that require special handling and more high-touch care from pharmacists. As such, his medication was transitioned to the company's specialty pharmacy unit, Accredo Specialty pharmacy, and there will be a different refill process for him for this medication.

Finnegan said he has had to have his doctor intercede to get his prescriptions filled, had to pay to get a brief supply of his medication locally at a higher price and has had his prescriptions canceled.
"This is absolutely ridiculous," Finnegan said. "Treating patients or whatever you want to call me in this manner for something critical is just terrible."

Luddy noted his coverage did not change, just the process by which he obtains this particular medication.
To avoid issues like these,
"At the beginning of this year, we had a lot of people who didn't look at their plans for open enrollment," Biggs said. "Something that they were used to doing changed, and because they didn't make any changes (to their plan), they're stuck with that. They really have to take advantage of open enrollment to make sure their medication is covered and their pharmacy is covered."
But Finnegan said he shouldn't have to change.
