"We're already up to 100," he said, adding he is happy to have 100 built. "Sixteen years ago, we built No. 1 at

"It's pretty important to me to have you guys here," Burgett said humbly. "Thank you. I don't know how many more I can give you."
Even if it is
Burgett said he plans and builds each Mesonet station.
"This station is similar to all the other stations. We try to put them in rural communities. We're in three states right now:
The Mesonet stations record and send back real-time weather data, including temperature, wind speed, rainfall, soil temperature and soil moisture, Burgett said.
"And all of that data is coming back every five minutes," he said.
"We get ground truth information on rainfall that's updated every couple of minutes, so we know what the rainfall rates are on storms. For purposes of flash flood forecasting and stuff, we can see how much rain is occurring, and how quickly,' Lipe said.
Another NWS meteorologist,
"They can be triggers for severe weather such as tornadoes and the like. Seeing on a small, small, much smaller scale than is typical, having these stations spaced out fairly closely, we can see a lot that other locations might miss. It helps us validate warnings, or perhaps (make) a decision not to warn," Jurecka said.
Before the Mesonet existed, Lipe said, weather stations in the area were in
"They're a long ways apart, and a lot of weather systems just slide in between them, and you never know what's going on. With these scattered just every 15 to 30 miles around the region, you can see the structure of those weather systems a lot, lot better," Lipe said.

"With this, with the Mesonet, we can see exactly where that dry line is, and see how fast it's progressing, and if it's progressing as fast as the computer models say it is, or if it's slower. That can make a big difference of where the severe weather will impact the area," Jurecka said.
