Just a short time later, a group of sixth, seventh and eighth graders put that training to use when the bus they were riding in crashed through a guard rail and into a wooded ravine just a few blocks from the school, authorities said.

The driver, who was not ticketed, was standing outside the bus, with the students, when police arrived, sheriff's police said.
Four students complained of minor shoulder pain, the sheriff's department said. One student was transported to the hospital for evaluation and was released, Sullivan said.
Police said the three other students were released by emergency personnel to the principal. Other students were transported back to the school at
"We are very fortunate to have wonderful first responders," the superintendent said.
Sullivan said he told parents to notify the school if any issues arise later.
He said he was "very proud" of his students who showed "maturity" while facing a "scary" situation. The bus evacuation drill teaches students how to evacuate the bus in a safe and orderly manner in the event of an accident, Sullivan said.
Parents of students on the bus were immediately notified, as were parents of students on that bus route. Through the school's notification system, via emails and social media, all district parents were made aware of the crash, Sullivan said.
"We assured them that safety of our students is our top priority and that we are working with First Student to insure their safety," Sullivan said.

"Thank God he didn't go into the culvert. The guardrail did its job," she said.
Vehicles coming over the hill are often going too fast to stop, he said.
"There have been a lot of near misses here," he said.
Sullivan acknowledged that there is a "fair amount of traffic" on this road, but said he was unaware of any complaints.
