Metro Roundup: Isu’s Bell On Payton Award Watch List [The Tribune-Star, Terre Haute, Ind.]
<p><chron>Oct. 05</chron>--<location value="LU/us.in.terute" idsrc="xmltag.org">TERRE HAUTE</location> -- <org>Indiana State</org> sophomore tailback <person>Shakir Bell</person> has been added to the <person>Walter Payton</person> Award Watch List by The Sports Network.</p><p>The <person>Walter Payton</person> Award, in its 25th season, honors the most outstanding player in FCS football and Bell was one of four players nationally to be added to the watch list.</p><p>Bell is one of four players from the <org>Missouri Valley Football Conference</org> to be featured on the watch list as <org>Youngstown State's</org><person>Jamaine Cook</person>, <org>North Dakota State's</org><person>D.J. McNorton</person> and <org>Northern Iowa's</org><person>Tirrell Rennie</person> are also honored.</p><p>Bell has helped lead the Sycamores to their first 4-1 start since 2004 and their first 2-0 <org>Missouri Valley Football Conference</org> start since 1996. Through five games, Bell has amassed 767 rushing yards, which is the highest total anyone in the <org>Indiana State</org> program has ever posted this early in a season.</p><p>His 153.4 rushing yards per game average ranks second nationally and needs just 233 more rushing yards over the next two games to become the earliest 1000-yard rusher in the history of the program.</p><p>Basketball</p><p>--ISU women name tri-captains -- In a vote conducted by the 14 members of the 2011-12 <org>Indiana State</org> women's basketball team, seniors <person>Brittany Schoen</person> and <person>Shannon Thomas</person> and junior <person>Taylor Whitley</person> have been selected as team captains for the upcoming season.</p><p>Schoen, a 5-foot-6 senior guard from <location value="LU/us.in.elieth" idsrc="xmltag.org">Elizabeth, Ind.</location>, enters her final season in ISU blue with 781 career points, including 198 three-pointers. The sharpshooter set the <org>Indiana State</org> single-season record for treys in 2010-11, knocking down 87 from beyond the arc,</p><p>Thomas, a 6-foot-4 senior center from <location value="LU/us.oh.sproro" idsrc="xmltag.org">Springboro, Ohio</location>, earned Second Team All-MVC and First Team Scholar-Athlete selections following her junior season, as campaign that saw lead the team with averages of 13.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.</p><p>Whitley, a 5-foot-9 junior guard from <location value="LU/us.il.geneva" idsrc="xmltag.org">Geneva, Ill.</location>, took her game to another level in her sophomore season, nearly doubling her outputs in points (7.6 to 12.1 per game), rebounds (2.8 to 4.5 per game) and assists (2.4 to 4.7 2.4 per game).</p><p>ISU begins their 2011-12 season on <chron>Nov. 4</chron> with an exhibition matchup vs. Bellarmine.</p><p>Golf</p><p>--Feducia sets record -- At <location value="LU/us.in.indpol" idsrc="xmltag.org">Indianapolis, Indiana</location> State junior <person>Reece Feducia</person> broke the school record for a 36-hole tournament as she fired a career best two-under 68, and the low round for the tournament, to finish with a 144 total and third place at the Butler Fall Invitational at <org>Highland Country Club</org> on Tuesday.</p><p>Feducia was one of three Sycamores who placed in the top 20 and one of two that finished in the top 10 as <org>Indiana State</org> placed third in the nine-team tournament.</p><p>Sycamore sophomore <person>McCall Christopher</person> had a 76 in finish with 150 and tied for seventh, while freshman <person>Amanda Smith</person> posted a 78 to finish at 151 in a tie for 12th.</p><p>IUPUI had the low round of 287 but was not able to move past <org>Butler</org> for the team championship as the Bulldogs posted a 296 for a 591 total to win the title by four shots. IUPUI was second with 595 while the Sycamores were third with 601.</p><p>Soccer</p><p>--Rose men win -- <org>Rose-Hulman</org> scored two second half goals and relied on strong defense in a shutout to earn a 2-0 men's victory over <org>Illinois Wesleyan</org> on Tuesday.</p><p>Sophomore <person>Ben Green</person> snapped a scoreless tie in the 74th minute on a score, courtesy of a pass from sophomore <person>Mike Schiff</person>. Sophomore <person>William Senat</person> added an insurance goal in the 88th minute, courtesy of a pass from senior <person>Clint Vatterrodt</person>.</p><p>In goal, senior <person>Eric Davenport</person> and sophomore <person>Jake Crouch</person> (Fort combined on a shutout.
