MURPHY INTRODUCES THE PUERTO RICO HEALTH INSURANCE FAIRNESS ACT
Congressional Documents & Publications
Today, U.S. Representative Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18) introduced the Puerto Rico Health Insurance Fairness Act, legislation repealing the health insurance tax (HIT) for Puerto Rico that unfairly penalizes consumers on the island who do not benefit from the Affordable Care Act. HIT is estimated to cost Puerto Ricans $200 million in 2016 alone, which further exacerbates the ongoing health care crisis on the island. "This repeal is about fairness. The American citizens living in Puerto Rico should not have to pay for a program that they receive no benefits from," said Murphy. "Furthermore, with Puerto Rico undergoing a health care crisis, Congress should be doing everything it can to assist residents - not exacerbating an ongoing problem. I hope my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will support this common-sense bill to help keep health care accessible and affordable for the 3.5 million Americans living on the island."
Joining Murphy in introducing the Puerto Rico Health Insurance Fairness Act is Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi (D-PR).
