Caffeine, the powerful stimulant found in coffee, gives millions of Americans an extra boost everyday. Many people drink coffee to focus at work, or even to get out of bed in the morning. New studies show that coffee has yet another use - to improve focus on the road.

Too much coffee, on the other hand, might have little or adverse effects on driving ability. Of respondents who drink 2 cups of coffee per day, 80% say that coffee helps them focus while driving. Of respondents who drink more than 3 cups of coffee per day, however, only 76% say coffee helps them focus on the road. In addition, people who drink more than 3 cups of coffee per day are more likely to fall asleep behind the wheel. When it comes to optimal amount of coffee for focusing while driving, the "sweet spot" seems to be 2-3 cups per day. Anything more or less, the survey shows, has a smaller effect and correlates with riskier driving behavior.

Additional studies from medical journals "Sleep" and "Psycopharmacology" also show that caffeine consumption leads to safer driving.
"Sleep" published a randomized study in volume 30, issue 12 of their medical journal showing a positive correlation between coffee drinking and better nighttime driving. Their study, carried out by a team of French researchers, showed that coffee significantly improved driving performance in young and middle-aged drivers. Coffee lowered the risk of driving errors by 89% for middle aged participants, and by 23% for younger drivers.
