The new station would not replace the current stations used by Fire Districts 1 and 2. Those would remain in operation.
The eastern side of the district is our growth area," he said. And the fact that some new homes in the district are located more than 5 miles from either of the current stations leads to longer response times and higher insurance costs for homeowners.
When the new station is build, Caughey said, "the vision is to have both organizations participating together (on calls) mutually in order to provide the best service we can."
According to the scope of work provided to the engineering firm by the county, the new station would ideally include two large bays, eight bedrooms, a kitchen, a day room, a weight room, a training room, offices and more.
The new facility will likely allow the districts to expand their residency program, which provides training to future firefighters and emergency personnel, Ash said. She said the county is considering the possibility of applying for grants to pay for the construction of the new station.
"I appreciate everyone's work getting to this point," however, until the design work is complete, county officials will not know what specific grant option to pursue, Ash said.
There is currently no specific timetable for when construction of the station at Archer could begin.
