NAIC Calls For Multi-State Examination Of Anthem
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) today announced immediate action calling for a multi-state examination of Anthem, Inc. and its affiliates, following the discovery of a cybersecurity breach at the health insurance company. The Colorado Division of Insurance is a member of the NAIC.
“Since the news broke, regulators have been working together and have been in discussion with Anthem executives,” said Monica Lindeen, NAIC President and Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance. “We are in agreement that an immediate and comprehensive review of the company’s security must be a priority to ensure protection of consumers who are covered by Anthem.”
Given the potential scope of the breach and the number of consumers impacted, the NAIC anticipates all 56 states and territories will sign on to the examinations, which will be inclusive of all subsidiaries and affiliates of Anthem affected by the breach. States with significant Anthem business are expected to take the lead: Indiana, California, Missouri, Maine and New Hampshire.
NAIC resources will support state insurance departments throughout the process. The NAIC Cybersecurity (EX) Task Force will monitor these efforts, update best practices and determine whether regulatory action is warranted.
Anthem has established a dedicated website for members to get information about this breach – www.anthemfacts.com. Current and former Anthem members can also call Anthem’s dedicated toll-free number with questions about this incident, 1-877-263-7995.
