Scott's apology amid a second T mishap capped what she called a "challenging week" that also saw the commuter rail stumble out of the gates after Tuesday's blizzard with 28 disabled trains and an abysmal 37 percent on-time rate for Wednesday morning rush hour. By
The next morning, a Red Line train pulling into Quincy Center overshot the station by about 35 feet. Its electrical propulsion system failed when the operator backed up, prompting the doors on one car to lock while acrid smoke from the train's spinning wheels filled a subway car.
Earlier yesterday, Pesaturo softened his previous hard-line stance, saying, "It was never the MBTA's intention to question what the customers were feeling or experiencing ... at Quincy Center. The MBTA apologizes for the unsettling experience created by the mechanical issues with the Red Line train."
Pesaturo's backpedaling came in response to a clearly miffed Baker, who let it be known he was not happy with the T's callous criticism of its own riders.
