New York Grants To Aid In Auto Theft Investigations

The grant funding is being credited with helping law enforcement agencies to combat motor vehicle theft. Vehicle theft has been steadily declining in
Law enforcement agencies reported 15,451 vehicle thefts in 2013, a 10 percent decrease from 2012 and a 62 percent decrease since 2003.
DalPorto said the grant money is used in a variety of ways.
"It pays for overtime for our detectives to actively investigate auto theft," DalPorto said. "It allows them to work cases that might otherwise sit because they are property crimes, not violent crimes."
Grant money can also be used to fund all or a portion of the salaries of assistant district attorneys and investigators specifically assigned to handle motor vehicle theft and insurance fraud cases, pay overtime for enhanced enforcement and
The grants are awarded by the state's Motor Vehicle Theft and Insurance Fraud Prevention program, which is overseen by a 12-member Board. The board targets urban communities with high rates of auto fraud and theft.
