Then, as the investigation was continuing, Hernandez crashed his Toyota Tacoma while allegedly driving drunk in
The Toyota was being tracked at the time with a hidden GPS device that investigators had placed on the truck.
Hernandez left the scene of the crash and called Moya, instructing him to report to police that he was driving the Tacoma, so that Hernandez would not be arrested, Mallard said.
With some of the insurance money Hernandez received for the totaled vehicle, Hernandez was able to purchase more pills to sell, Mallard said.
For his trouble, Moya -- who was nowhere near the crash -- was instructed to make a personal injury claim and go to a particular chiropractor, Mallard said. The insurance company was billed for visits that never took place.
Hernandez and a number of other associates are still awaiting trial.
Richard said that one of Moya's employers has even offered to hold his restaurant job for him until he is paroled.
