In addition to losing his right leg, Everitt suffered hand injuries, nerve damage and several broken ribs and coded twice.
"The broken ribs," Everitt joked, were more painful than the leg.

"My bike went one way and I went another," Everitt said. "I was wearing my helmet, which is good cause I landed on my head, but the foam padding in the helmet left a dent in the back of my head."
Harvey and Landram arrived first on the scene along with two other Station 83 firefighters one of whom has since joined the army while the other moved to another job.
"Basically we wanted to do something for them,"
But for the actions of the firefighters that day, Everitt and his wife said, he wouldn't be here today."
Everitt noted that several veteran motorcyclists have been involved in accidents in recent months Accidents almost always caused by others driving too fast, texting or being otherwise inattentive, he said.
"That's why I've always been an advocate for share the road," Everitt said. "And always remind everybody that May's not the only month for [motorcyclists]. We're out there 365 days a year."
The woman who hit him has yet to make contact or apologize, Everitt said.
Such was not the case during Thursday's ESD meeting. The firefighters, ESD commissioners and attendees were as thankful to the Everitts as they were to them.

Everitt said he's recovering, getting used to life with a prosthetic leg but glad to be alive. His love of riding, for now at least, remains on hold.
"For two months I couldn't sleep at all," Everitt said. "Just kept seeing that red pickup coming at me out of nowhere. "Like I said, I've been riding since I was 12 but, if I ever do again, it will have to be a three wheeler."
